Of toaster ovens

Here's the thing.

I have now entered that stage of life where Chris is back in school, which means I don't have a car during the day, which means that instead of going home for lunch, I stay at the office. I would prefer to go home, naturally, but lunches at the office are actually pretty great.

As you can see here, it is literally a picnic. I've got my blanket, my sunglasses, my leftovers from Texas Roadhouse, a napkin, my books (I'm trying so hard to be good at reading the Book of Mormon, because our Bishop asked us to. But I'll be real with you, it's hard for me) (also, if you are wondering, my other book is Take the Cannoli by Sarah Vowell, and it is funny. And the other thing is the Halloween Oriental Trading catalog that came to the office. I am probably going to buy a gross of spider rings), my water bottle--just about everything I need for a delightful little lunchtime retreat.

However, I had a thought today. A thought that would make my work lunches even more glamorous and exciting than they already are. (See photo above for evidence of glamour and excitement.) Are you just dying to know what it is? Or did you already figure it out because it's the title of this post?

Yes. A toaster oven. I KNOW! Because here's the thing. Obviously our office has a microwave, we're not savages. But not everything re-heats well in a microwave. Sometimes things are soggy, you know? Also, cancer, maybe? Who knows. The point is, what if I had a toaster oven at work? Because a toaster oven is basically just a miniature oven, right? So I could re-heat things that need a little bit of crisp, and the crisp would be retained! I COULD POSSIBLY EVEN BAKE COOKIES. AT WORK. Do you realize what this means? My world would be completely changed, and it would be more awesome.

Here's the other thing. I don't have a toaster oven, and have only used one a couple of times. So friends, tell me. Are these just delusions? Is a toaster-oven-at-work-world not actually the glorious place I imagine it to be? Because I saw one on KSL for $15, and that seems like a pretty reasonable gamble to make. . . .

Never used one. But you know how some families have them and swear by them? Just get it. Then blog about all of the creations you make at work.

I have a toaster oven too and completely agree- a toaster oven at work would be awesome. There are so many times at work where where I think my sandwich would be THAT much better if I could toast my bread and melt cheese on it.

We got that same OT magazine today. I gave David a marker and told him to circle everything that he wants out of it. Kept him busy for a while...

Your picnic looks delightful!

I looked at that picture and thought, "What is that thing that looks like a dead cat in the middle of the blanket" STEAL THE ONE FROM THE CABIN DAWG. We never use it down there!

This post is full of awesome. But the most full of awesome part was where you said, "We have a microwave, we're not savages."

Char, you're such a vegetarian, thinking my steak looks like a dead cat. Also, OH MY GOSH! The one at the cabin! That is an incredible idea, because you're right, it never gets used. Doing it. Conference weekend, that thing is coming home with me.

And I'm glad everyone is so supportive of this venture. Thanks guys.

I always thought toaster ovens were redundant and ridiculous, but my last apartment had one, and now I'm a believer. I used it just as much as the microwave and oven, but for different reasons.

Some things need a toaster oven.

I have never owned a toaster oven and would not really know what to use it for. Please tell me how it goes--I might even consider getting one for my office if you love it.

We have a toaster oven at work (and at home) and it is perfect for reheating pizza or for bringing a ham and cheese sandwich and toasting it yourself! I think you should definitely buy one! My favorite snack to make in the toaster oven (at home) is a grapefruit with brown sugar toasted... yum.

we loved our toaster oven, I just hated it for taking up too much counter space, because it was rather large and I didn't have much counter space to offer in the first place. And if we hadn't given it to DI I would totally give it to you. :o( but yes they are fantastic. and way to go with the BOM reading. I really have been trying to read it...but I like the Ensign better lately. I used to be an awesome BOM reader. and now...not. taking it to lunch is a good idea, though. good work.
