34 to go

So, one of my New Year's Resolutions is to read 50 books this year.

I've been keeping a list over on the side of the blog. Check it out, if you so desire. It's at the bottom of the column. Or, in case you don't want to scroll on down, these are the books so far for 2011:

1. Tortilla Flat, by John Steinbeck
2. The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak
3. Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand
4. So Brave, Young and Handsome, by Leif Enger
5. The Blue Castle, by L. M. Montgomery
6. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, by Alexander McCall Smith
7. Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte
8. Rainbow Valley, by L. M. Montgomery
9. Rilla of Ingleside, by L. M. Montgomery
10. Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
11. Sanditon, by Jane Austen
12. Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys
13. The Poet and the Murderer, by Simon Worrall
14. Bossypants, by Tina Fey
15. Emma, by Jane Austen
16. Half Broke Horses, by Jeannette Walls

I have read some really great books so far. But I definitely need to pick up the pace a little, since we're nearly halfway through the year and I am not at 25 yet. (But I am 25 years old. What does it mean?)

Also, I have a list of "to-read" books that I keep on goodreads (let's be friends!) but for some reason I'm not feeling particularly thrilled about any of them just now.

So, what I'm trying to say is, let's talk about books. Give me some suggestions.

Oh, but before you do, let me tell you this--I like non-fiction a lot. I like classics a lot. I will probably not read any Mormon fiction. I will not read anything with vampires (been there, done that). Anything fantasy or sci-fi will not capture my fancy, unless penned by Joanne Rowling. I'm not trying to like make specifications for your book recommendations, I'm just being up front about the fact that if you tell me to read some Twilight-esque tale written by a girl in your ward that brings in gospel principles, I will most likely not read it. Sorry to be a rude face.

And also I am wondering about this--have you read any of the books on my list? How did you like them?

Also, my friend Katie started a blog about books that is fittingly called Just a Blog About Books. A few peeps write little book reviews and have discussions, and it's fun. I've written about nearly all the books I've read this year there. So you should check it out, if you want. And if you want to contribute, let us know, and we can invite you to be an author of the blog. So yeah. Reading is good.

See? Even caged-up lions love to read.

Hey Erin, its me, Ashley, Amanda's sister. I bet you didn't even know I was keeping up with your blog. I love it, btw. anyway, my mom really likes this book called, "the help". actually a lot of people like it, I've heard. So maybe check that one out. Also, how was Bossypants? I am dying to read that. I heart Tina Fey very much.

I love this! I have been trying to read more this year, but I seem to have hit a road block while reading Les Mis. Maybe I should just try to finish that by the end of this year.

I actually read The Book Thief a few months ago and loved it. Then I went on GoodReads and found all of these terrible reviews for it. I hate it when that happens. I would love to contribute to the blog sometime though. Maybe it would encourage me to actually finish Les Mis. :)

By the way, what ward are you in now? We are in a family one because we live up by Days. It seems pretty decent from the two times we have gone.

I'm glad the book blog works for you guys... I tried starting one but we've all been a little busy lately.. :) You should join ours and just copy/paste your other posts. ;) Summer is coming so my schedule is looking pretty open for reading.

Secret Life of Bees was a good book if you haven't read it yet. (I haven't seen the movie.)

Also, If you ever want opinions on childrens/youth literature, I'm your (wo)man. Youth literature sums up my world - Rightly so when you teach 6th grade.

Anyway, good luck on reaching your goal!
